Jack’s Abby is the sponsor brewery for this weekend’s Drink Craft Beer’s Springfest. We’ve brewed a special Double India Pale Lager for the fest. Read more about The ABCS on our Beer page or on the Drink Craft Beer blog. Here’s the video they shot when they came to help brew:
This weekend, April 5th & 6th, Drink Craft Beer Springfest focuses on New England-made beers that feature one of our favorite ingredients, hops! By attending, you’ll be able to sample 70+ beers from 25 of New England’s best craft brewers, each one of them bringing at least one hop-focused brew! Many of these are being made specifically for this event or will be released there.
Additionally, you can sample and purchase from several local food vendors including Drink Craft Beer friends such as Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, of Great Food Truck Race fame and known for their delicious gourmet concoctions perfect to pair with hoppy beers. Other food options will include delicious seasonal fare, local cheese and more.
Friday night will be a VIP session called Hoppy Hour. There will be a collection for special beers from 25 New England breweries, each one a special batch or variant made just for the Hoppy Hour VIP Session in addition to the full Saturday lineup of brews! Everyone will bring at least one special brew, dry-hopped cask or other super limited beer that will only be available on Friday night and was made specifically with this session in mind.

Framingham, MA, July 13, 2012: Jack’s Abby Brewing, the only all-lager brewery in Massachusetts, is celebrating its first anniversary with two events featuring over ten beers and a cask offering. The first event will be on Thursday, July 19th, at 7pm, at the British Beer Company in Framingham. The second event will be on Saturday, July 21st, at 7pm at Meadhall in Cambridge.
Jack’s Abby specializes in brewing traditional German style lagers with a distinctly American craft twist to them. This creative flair will be on display at these events with year-round brews such as Hoponius Union and specialties like Bourbon Barrel Aged Smoke & Dagger with Peanut Butter. The events will also serve as the release for two new beers: Ginger & Juice, a Ginger India Pale Lager with grapefruit, and Brett Biere de Garde, a biere de garde aged in white wine barrels with Brettanomyces wild yeast.
“Specialty brews have become a big part of what we do,” says brewmaster and co-owner Jack Hendler. “We get the opportunity to experiment with different ingredients and really push the boundaries of what lagers, and even craft beer in general, can be.” Brother and co-owner Eric Hendler added, “It is hard to believe that it has been a year already. I am looking forward to sitting down with everyone and enjoying the beers that we have worked so hard to make.”

June 11, 2012 – Framingham, MA - Jack’s Abby Brewing, an American craft brewer specializing in lagers, today announced the purchase of additional tanks that will allow for increased production to meet the growing demand for its lagers.
“In our first year of production we’ve seen an unexpectedly high level of demand for our lagers as well as our seasonal beers,” said Jack Hendler, brewmaster at Jack’s Abby. “These tanks will allow us to expand bottling and grow our line-up of seasonals and specialty beers”
The new tanks include one 40 brite beer tank and two 40 barrel fermenters. This will allow Jack’s Abby to introduce new lagers and increase production.
According to Hendler, the first beer out of the new brite beer tank will be Red Tape Lager to be released one year from the original brew date.
“With the new tanks, we’ll be bottling our barrel aged Biere de Garde Rye Lager aged with brettanomyces, a Summer IPL with ginger, grapefruit peel and buckwheat, Octoberfest, Wet Hop Lager, Kiwi Rising DIPL, and Saxonator through the end of the year,” said Hendler. “We’ll also have various barrel-aged offerings including a sour version of our Leisure Time Lager.”
More photos of the new tank can be viewed in this album on facebook.

There is only one week left until you can try some Jack’s Abby Brewing beer. Our first two batches will be kegged and ready to pour on Thursday, July, 21st. They are Saxon Sons Pilsner and Red Tape Lager. We have a few things planned to celebrate this occasion that will give everyone a chance to join us in being the first people to drink some Jack’s Abby.
First we are extending our hours at the brewery for Thursday-Saturday to noon-8pm. If you choose to stop by there will be a lot going on. First off, there will be tours of the brewery where you will get a chance to talk with all of us and see how everything is done. There will also be tastings, so everyone can get a taste of the beer. Finally, we will be filling growlers so you can take some home.
When we close at 8pm the fun does not stop, we have much more planned. On Thursday we will be heading straight to the British Beer Company in Framingham. The BBC will feature our Saxon Sons Pilsner as the beer of the week, providing a great deal on a pint. We will be there the rest of the night to give away some merchandise and have a drink with you.
On Friday night we will be heading to the Framingham Tavern. It is an amazing location in the middle of downtown Framingham. Again, we will be bringing merchandise with us to give away throughout the night. Both of our first beers will be on tap, so come hang out with us.
We will also be out on Saturday night at a currently undisclosed location. We will announce it on our facebook page and twitter feed and soon as the details are finalized. I hope that we see all of you at least one of these nights.

Our pre-brewing checklist is quickly dwindling down. As we blogged last week all our equipment is in the building. Yesterday, our boiler passed its start-up inspection flawlessly, which was one of the last hurdles. Barring any last minute surprises, installation will be finished this week.
Last week we also mentioned that we had not yet received our license from the state Alcohol Beverages Control Commission. Our response was took longer than their original time-line had suggested, which caused us no shortage of worry. However, on Tuesday we finally received confirmation that we had been granted our Farmer-Brewery license. Despite the stress we felt as we waited for their response everything went through without a problem.
All this means that we will be brewing very soon. Our current plan is to brew a special red lager first, then follow it up the next day with a double batch of our Saxon Sons Pilsner. This will allow us to learn the particulars of our system before we brew one of our core beers. From here we will be brewing once a week.
Everyone can get the latest information on our facebook and twitter pages. We will let everyone know the moment we start brewing and keep you informed of when you can come by to try some Jack’s Abby beer.

This week we finally received our brewhouse, the last piece of equipment we were waiting on. The brewhouse consists primarily of the Mash Tun and Kettle, along with a few other components. This is where the beer will be made before being put into tanks to ferment. Some work still needs to be done with the installation, but it will be ready
soon.
At the same time there is still the matter of finalizing all of our permits and licenses. As per the long tradition of bureaucracy, these things take time. The way things stand right now, it is looking like it will be two more weeks before we get the green light from the Government to start brewing. We are hoping that things will come through faster but there is not much that we can do other than wait.
Due to this delay we have decided to hold off on Leisure Time Lager, our summer seasonal, that we had blogged about before. We would not be able to finish it before the summer was mostly over. Instead we will focus on our three main beers. And, by the time they are out we will be thinking about our fall seasonal.
We were hoping to tell you this week that we had started brewing. While that is not the case, things are moving forwards. We now have all our equipment on sight and will be ready to brew the moment we get the final OK.
As we get ready to start brewing in the near future there are still plenty of other projects to work on. One of the most exciting is this large version of our logo that Abby is painting. With a diameter of ten feet this logo will command a vantage over the entire brewery. Abby has been working on in for several days now and we have been posting her progress to our facebook page. If you want to see the full photo album of this endeavor check out our facebook album.

Our gift shop will be open so you can check out our t-shirts and other merchandise too.
One major goal we have for the brewery is to help promote our local community. One way we will be doing that is by teaming up with local artists to provide a new venue for sharing their work. In the brewery, we have a large open wall that measures eight feet by thirty feet. Local artists will have the opportunity to come into the brewery and create a mural on the wall. The first mural is currently being designed and work on it will begin shortly. We plan to expand on this community initiative by enabling local artists to have a show at the brewery and display their work. We think having area artists involved with Jack’s Abby Brewing will be a lot of fun for everyone involved.
As miserable as the rain has been for the past two weeks, the weather has been great for the garden. A few of the hops have already made their way onto the strings where they will eventually climb to a full nine feet. With the weather turning warmer, the rest of our plants should be in the ground shortly. If you stop by, take a look at the garden. It is really shaping up to be something great.
